Top 5: Players to have graduated from the East Bengal Academy this decade!

East Bengal football club will complete its 100 years of existence on 1st August next year. The gargantuan institution has also been influential in developing young footballers through the East Bengal Academy who came up the ranks and have performed for both East Bengal and Indian National Football team. Some have left the club but are still performing very well to get mentioned.

Let us look at 5 players, in order of their call up to the senior side, who have graduated from the East Bengal Academy and did excellently for the senior teams in this decade:

Semilen Doungel

The Manipuri boy joined the East Bengal youth setup from JCT Academy in 2011. He impressed then Coach Trevor James Morgan and was quickly promoted to the senior side as he made his international cup debut against Kuwaiti side Kazma SC.

“Len”, as he was lovingly called, has scored 15 goals in his East Bengal career. He left the club in 2014 to join Shillong Lajong. He is currently a member of the Indian National Football team and plays for FC Goa in the ISL

Nikhil Poojari

The tall lanky boy from Mangalore, Karnataka joined the East Bengal Academy in 2015 from Mumbai FC and had a very impressive 2015-16 U19 I-League campaign, which earned him a promotion to the senior team next season.

In 2016, he impressed Coach Trevor James Morgan and got himself on first team list with big names like Jackichand Singh and Romeo Fernandes sitting on the bench.

He played for 2 seasons with the East Bengal senior side, earning a call up to the Indian national side. He is currently playing for the Indian Super League side Hyderabad FC.

Mehtab Singh

The boy from Punjab is one of the best talents to have come up from the East Bengal Academy and is currently an important part of the East Bengal senior team under Coach Alejandro Menendez.

Mehtab Singh became a household name after he had headed home the winner against Mohun Bagan in the U18 I-League in 2017. His impressive performance led then coach Khalid Jamil to call up the 17 year old boy for the senior team.

Mehtab Singh has been on the first team list for Alejandro Menendez this season and all Red and Gold fans have huge expectations from the boy from their academy.

Manoj Mohammed

The boy from Rajgunj, Jalpaiguri from North Bengal was the captain of the East Bengal U18 side that won the 2018 IFA Shield defeating arch-rivals Mohun Bagan.

His impressive performance led new coach Alejandro Menendez to promote him to the senior squad and he became a regular starter in he first eleven in his very first season in the senior squad.

He had 16 appearances in the I-League campaign last season as a left back which East Bengal finished runner’s up.

He has also given a contract extension for 3 years, as like all East Bengal fans, we hope he achieves his potential in years to come.

Bidyashagar Singh

The fast, hardworking and clinical number 26 – the boy from Manipur Bidyashagar Singh will surely be on our list as one of most promising talents to have graduated from the East Bengal Academy.

Bidyashagar Singh joined the East Bengal Academy in 2016 and was part of the team that narrowly became runner’s up in the 2016-17 U18 I-League. He had scored 6 goals in the campaign including a goal each in Semi Final and the Final.

Bidyashagar Singh was promoted to the senior squad in 2018 and scored his first senior goal away against Shillong Lajong.

He became a household name for his performance in the 2019 Durand Cup and Calcutta League as he scored 8 goals in 12 appearances for the Red and Gold brigade.

He is an important part of Alejandro Menendez’s side as they look to win the coveted I-League trophy.
