Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is perhaps the one name which jubilated and united millions of people, as the country went into a frenzy whenever the 5’5″ lad from Mumbai came onto the crease with a bat on his hand. It was in the 90s when Cricket became the religion of the country and Sachin Tendulkar became the GOD of a billion dreams.
On the occasion of the “Master Blaster’s” 47th birthday, we wish to recall the time when Sachin Tendulkar was signed by East Bengal Club to play and lead the team in the P. Sen Trophy.
Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev, along with Pravin Amre, Ajay Jadeja and Vijay Dahiya were signed by East Bengal Club to match the signings of Javagal Srinath and Sourav Ganguly by arch-rivals Mohun Bagan, for the P. Sen Trophy in 1994, as both of them reached the final of tournament to be held at the historic Eden Gardens.
More than 80,000 people filled up the stadium to see the Derby in the final, this time surprisingly for a Cricket match, which was hyped up due to presence of so many Indian national team stars.
Sunil Gavaskar who was commentating for the game quoted, “I cannot imagine that 80,000 people has come to see a club cricket match, this is unbelievable.”
Sachin however did not score much in the final as he was dismissed early by Javagal Srinath, however, Kapil Dev played a match winning knock as East Bengal Club defeated arch-rivals Mohun Bagan to lift the 1994 P. Sen Trophy under the leadership of Sachin Tendulkar.
East Bengal Club and the fans shall treasure this historic event forever in their memories, because it is not everyday when the “God” of cricket dons the Red and Gold jersey and leads the team to a championship.
We from BADGEB wish you a very happy birthday Master. Thank you for all the memories you provided us for 25 years.
