It is official now, East Bengal FC has roped in the services of the highly rated former Norwich City FC and Wigan Athletic winger Anthony Pilkington for the upcoming season in the Indian Super League.
The 32-year-old former Republic of Ireland national team winger was part of the Wigan Athletic team last season in the English Championship (2nd tier) making 16 appearances for the Latics, scoring 3 goals. Pilkington has played 75 matches in the Premier League for Norwich City FC with 14 goals to his name in the English top flight. He joined Cardiff City in 2014/15 and remained in the English Championship ever since, moving to Wigan Athletic in 2018/19.
Anthony Pilkington is a versatile player with shooting abilities in both feet. He can play either of the wings and also as an attacking midfielder or second striker. Robbie Fowler has handpicked his foreigners according to his plans and it is highly likely that a player of such standard can be one of the top signings of the Indian Super League this season.
Just a fact for all the East Bengal fans, Anthony Pilkington won’t be the first Republic of Ireland player to wear the Red and Gold kit. He will be the second to former Arsenal FC and Norwich City FC defender John Devine who played for the club in 1987.
