Quess East Bengal FC are all set to face the Malabarians – Gokulam Kerala FC on Wednesday at the Kalyani Stadium in their 6th match of the Hero I-League campaign.
Coming in from a heartbreaking last minute defeat against Churchill Brothers at Goa, the game against Gokulam Kerala at home is either “make or break” for coach Alejandro Menendez boys, for their hunt for the coveted I-League trophy.
The team has been wasteful in finishing off the chances they have been creating upfront, with just 8 goals scored so far in 5 games. The attacking duo Marcos de la Espada and Jaime Colado are under the scrutiny of the Red and Gold faithful.
The defence too would be a cause of concern for Alejandro Menendez as they have failed to keep a cleansheet in any of the five matches so far. With Borja Gomez unavailable and Marti Crespí on 3 bookings to his name, the team will face a tough challenge against one of the strongest attacks of the I-League.
Alejandro Menendez spoke to the media ahead of the game and said, “We know our strengths and weaknesses. We know Gokulam Kerala FC is a very strong opponent but we will fight and try to win the game. We know there are two players with 3 bookings but we have to manage. It is a part of the game.”
On being asked about the possibility of playing new recruit Abhash Thapa, Alejandro said, “We know how good Abhash Thapa is. He can play as a winger as well as fullback. We would try to utilize his services in our campaign.”
Alejandro Menendez was also vocal about his team creating many chances in the matches so far, he said “More the number of chances your team creates, the more there will be chances to score a goal.”
Gokulam Kerala FC coach Fernando Santiago was also confident as he spoke to the press ahead of the game. He said, “We know East Bengal is a very strong opponent but we too are a good side. We have shown it during the Durand Cup and we will try to win again on Wednesday.”
The Malabarians will miss two of their regular back four starters, Mohamed Irshad and Haroon Amiri due to suspension. They will also miss their goalkeeper V. Baskaran who was injured in the last game against Chennai City FC.
Both the teams will look to get back into winning ways and it would surely be a mouthwatering clash on Wednesday at the Kalyani Stadium.
