Defensive lapses and inability to finish chances would sum of the story for the Red and Gold brigade as coach Alejandro and his boys as Quess East Bengal FC go down 2-1 against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan in the Kolkata Derby on Sunday at the Salt Lake Stadium.

The stage was set for an enthralling derby game with more than 63 thousand fans filling the stands. Mohun Bagan started the game well in the early minutes and took control over the midfield as they dictated terms with Joseba Beitia controlling the pace of the game.

The Green and Maroons took the lead in the game in the 19th minute as Nongdomba Naorem cut in from the left and put in a perfect cross for an unmarked Beitia to head in and make it 1-0. The East Bengal defence was ball watching as no one followed Beitia into the box as he headed in the goal.

East Bengal did manage to create a few chances late in the first half, even forcing a goal line clearance from Daniel Cyrus but failed to equalise as both teams headed into halftime.

The Red and Gold brigade started the second half positively but it was once again Mohun Bagan, entirely against the run of play, increased their lead as Baba Diawara reacted first and headed in a corner kick from Joseba Beitia in the 64th minute to make it 2-0.

Alejandro Menendez put in Edmund Lalrindika in place of Pintu Mahata in an attempt to change the proceedings and it worked well as Edmund played in a wonderful through ball for Marcos de la Espada, who slotted in from 1:1 position to reduce the margin in the 77th minute.

It was unfortunate for Edmund Lalrindika as he suffered an injury and had to be taken off after the goal. Abhijit Sarkar came in for him as the Red and Gold brigade looked for an equaliser. They hit the frame for he goal twice but couldn’t find the back of the net.

The Mariners held their fort in the last 15 minutes as they secured a 2-1 victory over Quess East Bengal FC, ensuring their first Derby win in 2 years.

Coach Alejandro Menendez will be under huge pressure now as the team has suffered a hattrick of defeats in the I-League campaign, making it very difficult for a comeback in the title hunt as Quess East Bengal FC now has just 8 points from 7 matches!
