Huge blow to East Bengal FC’s ISL hopes?

AIFF executive committee had a meeting yesterday regarding the plans for Indian football for the upcoming season and when they can again possibly start the tournaments. The outcome of the meeting is certainly a huge blow to East Bengal’s hopes to play in the Indian Super League this season. As reported by TOI, the AIFF wants to seek another year’s exemption to expand the ISL, as per requirement of the AFC.
The AIFF wrote to the AFC about expanding the top-most league to a minimum 27 match affair from the next season since the organisation is unsure to when they can start the league due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As reported, the parent body wants to continue the 10-team tournament in the current format for the 2020/21 season too.
The East Bengal FC officials have been pretty vocal about playing in the Indian Super League for the upcoming season however the decision taken in today’s meeting would certainly come as a blow to their ambitions.
East Bengal FC have already been very active in the transfer market having roped in 14 new signings in hope to participate in the ISL next season. There are few more names who are linked with the club, most of them coming from other ISL teams.
As per sources, the club management has contacted the AIFF regarding a follow-up on the ISL issue however nothing yet has been confirmed. The club management would certainly be under pressure now after today’s meeting and the fans do expect an official announcement soon from them, which would clear out the air for everyone.
