East Bengal wins Kolkata Derby in a 5 goal thriller

East Bengal FC has finally broken the jinx after 33 months to win against their arch rivals Mohun Bagan in a 5 goal thriller on Sunday evening at the Salt Lake Stadium.

The green and maroon brigade opened the scoring in the 13 minute after Azharuddin Mallick slotted home a perfect cross from Omar El-Husseiny. East Bengal was quick to respond as Laldanmawia Ralte equalised just 4 minutes later from a series of quick passes, who was just on line with the Mohun Bagan defence when the ball was played.

Joby Justin increased the lead for the Red and Gold brigade just before the half time from a sublime overhead kick. This was his 5th goal in 7 matches in the current I-League.

After the break, Mohun Bagan was down to 10 men after Eze Kingsley was booked for the second time after he pulled down Joby Justin in the 62nd minute. To put salt on the wounds, East Bengal increased the lead from the resulting free kick with Laldanmawia Ralte getting his second of the evening as he poked in a cross from Lalrindika Ralte.

10 men Mohun Bagan put up a fight as the got one back with a super strike from Dipanda Dika which was however insufficient for Mohun Bagan to salvage a point.

Jobby Justin got a chance to make it 4 but missed a one-one in the 85th minute.

This was East Bengal’s 128th win in the all time overall 366th Derby match.
