East Bengal FC: Top 5 players with most appearances in the AFC Cup!

East Bengal Football Club has been one of the most successful Indian Football teams in the International arena, with three trophies to their name including the historic ASEAN Cup triumph in 2003 and campaigns like in 2013 AFC Cup where they reached the Semi Finals without losing a match on the journey to finally crash out to eventual Champions Kuwait SC. The Club still holds the record of most number of appearances by any Indian club in the AFC Cup – 8 times (2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015).
Today, we have compiled a list of Top 5 players who have appeared for the Red and Gold brigade most number of times in the AFC Cup.
5. Baljit Singh Sahni
The forward from Punjab who joined East Bengal FC in 2010, was one of the recognized faces of Indian football in the early part of last decade. Baljit Singh Sahni played for East Bengal FC for 5 seasons before moving on.
Baljit Singh Sahni has made 22 appearances for East Bengal FC in the AFC Cup although most of the came from the bench as he made just 4 starts in all those matches. He also scored 3 goals for the Red and Gold brigade in the AFC Cup, all of them coming in the 2011 edition of the tournament.
4. Sanju Pradhan
The Sikkimese right winger who joined East Bengal as a teenager in 2008 and went on to play for the club till 2013 and then once again in 2016 is fourth on the list for highest appearances for East Bengal FC in AFC Cup. He too has 22 appearances but has got 15 starts to his name.
Sanju Pradhan was also a pivotal member of the 2013 AFC Cup team that reached the Semifinals, although he left the club after it reached the quarterfinals. Sanju Pradhan however never scored for the Red and Gold brigade in the AFC Cup.
3. Saumik Dey
The darling of East Bengal fans, one of our own, Saumik Dey who donned the Red and Gold kit for 10 consecutive seasons, is the third name on the list.
Saumik Dey has made 23 appearances for the Red and Gold brigade with 21 in the starting eleven, across 6 editions of the tournament. The left back was one of the pivotal members of the 2013 AFC Cup squad that reached the semifinals.
2. Uga Okpara
The ever dependable and rock solid Nigerian Uga Okpara, who joined East Bengal FC in 2009 and played for 5 consecutive seasons, is second on the list with most appearances for East Bengal FC in AFC Cup. He has made 23 appearances across 4 editions of the tournament, all of them from the starting eleven.
Uga Okpara was instrumental in the 2013 AFC Cup campaign as he led the defence that reached the semifinals undefeated on the way. Uga Okpara has also scored a goal in the AFC Cup, which came in the away leg of the Semi-Final against Kuwait SC.
1. Mehtab Hossain
The midfield general who was one of the most consistent names of the East Bengal lineups for 10 seasons since joining the club in 2007, is the player with the most number of appearances for East Bengal FC in the AFC Cup.
Mehtab Hossain has made 34 appearances for the the Red and Gold brigade in the AFC Cup competition, with 32 starts to his name. Mehtab has also scored 2 goals across 6 editions of the tournament for East Bengal FC.
The most number of goals in AFC Cup Competition for Red and Gold brigade is however tagged to none of these 5 names and it is held by Nigerian forward Edeh Chidi who scored 6 goals in the 2013 edition, helping the club to reach the semifinals of the tournament.
