The Red and Gold fans can be ecstatic with the recent turn of events with the official announcement for the entry into the 2020/21 Indian Super League is just around the corner. The team management is also busy trying to ensemble a decent squad to be able to compete against the big guns of the ISL and hence some top foreigner names have been linked with the club for a move. Amongst the names, there is also the name of former Dutch World Cup runner’s up and UCL winner with FC Barcelona star Ibrahim Affelay.
Affelay has been a star name with his move from PSV Eindhoven to FC Barcelona in 2010, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2011 then moving on to Stoke City in the English Premier League. Although he suffered two major injuries during his stay at the English club, he made comebacks and had a spell at the Bundesliga with Hamburg FC before returning back to PSV Eindhoven in 2018.
The Dutch star has been linked with a move to East Bengal FC as a Marquee signing in the ISL and he himself in a recent interview stated that he is free for a move outside Netherlands and even to a far off lower ranked country if the conditions are suitable for him.
“I’m open to foreign countries. A beautiful country far from here, with a good quality of life, even at a somewhat lower level, to finish off nicely”Ibrahim Affelay to Fox Sports, 8 September 2020
The Dutch midfielder who has now suited his game as a central midfielder than as a winger as he was in his younger days is clearly open to opportunities and him being linked with East Bengal FC could be one of the big news for Indian football as a whole. The Dutch star is currently 34 years old and played four matches last season for Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.
