East Bengal FC: How the Reserve Team is shaping up?
Last Updated 9:41 PM 25th April 2020 .
East Bengal Football Club has been clear about their stand for the upcoming season, the officials have been very vocal about the senior team plying their trade in the Indian Super League from the 2020/21 season, however nothing has been officially announced as of yet.
The team management has decided to build two different squads for the upcoming season, one the senior team that is looking to play in the ISL and another the reserve team that will become the bridge between the academy and the senior team, and will participate in the 2nd division I-League and other minor trophies from the upcoming season.
The club executive committee has appointed a team of former players including the likes of Bhaichung Bhutia, Alvito D’Cunha, Chandan Das, Shashti Duley, Falguni Dutta etc. and lead by the head of the East Bengal FC Academy program and coach of U18 team Ranjan Chowdhury, to select and build the reserve team for the upcoming season.
Just before the lockdown happened due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the club had organised a three days trial to select players for the reserve team for the upcoming season. Bhaichung Bhutia had brought in three players from his United Sikkim setup, who impressed the selectors, among them defender 24 year old Sonam Zangpo has been confirmed for the reserve team.
The club recruiters have also roped in two promising players from Minerva Punjab academy and reserve team – 23 year old winger Dilliram Sanyasi and 20 year old forward Luntinmang Haokip.
Dilliram Sanyasi, hailing from Sikkim, is a hard-working and fast winger who has experience of playing in the 2018/19 I-League, making 6 appearances. He also featured in the AFC Cup match against Bangladesh’s Abahani Limited. in 2019.
Minerva Punjab owner Mr. Ranjit Bajaj has expressed his opinion on the duo when we had asked him about them. He said, “both of them need game time till they can prove themselves. East Bengal is a huge club. Mang is hard working boy and Dilliram is very quick on the wings, however for East Bengal standards they will have to work very hard.”
East Bengal FC have also recruited two players from the Tamil Nadu 7 Star Academy – midfielders Jeegesh Jegi and Maju Clarance. Both of them were selected on the basis of the trials that was conducted at the East Bengal ground. The 7 Star Academy has previously produced the likes of current ATK stars Micheal Regin and Micheal Soosairaj.
Jeegesh Jegi is a central attacking midfielder who can also play from the right. Maju Clarance is a left winger who can also play as a striker in the false 9 position.
The East Bengal FC team management has also decided to promote few of the best performers of the current U18 team, who had qualified for the play-off round in the 2019/20 season of the Hero Elite League into the reserve team for the upcoming season.
The team management has also decided to bring back the “Man of the series” of the U19 Zee Bangla Football League – Dip Saha and goalkeeper the U19 team Ayon Roy, who were left out of the senior squad after failing to impress coach Alejandro Menendez.
The club management is yet to announce the complete list of the players selected for the reserve team for the upcoming season, but we have compiled a list of the confirmed signings for the reserve team till date:
