The hunt for the head coach for the Red and Gold brigade is currently ongoing at full pace as the announcement for entry into the Indian Super League nears. The Club has officially announced that they have submitted the bid documents and now are awaiting the official declaration from ISL. In the meantime, the team management has also reported having received around 70-80 cv’s of coaches, among which there are some top names like Jose Pekerman, Sven Goran Eriksson and Bert van Marwijk. There was also serious interest towards Serbian manager Risto Vidakovic, who took a Philippines club to Asian glories. However, as per latest rumours, the club is strongly linked with former FC Barcelona player and assistant coach Eusebio Sacristán, who is tipped to take over as the head coach of East Bengal FC.
Eusebio Sacristán – played for the Barcelona dream team under legendary Dutch manager Johan Cruyff and won the Champions League in 92 as a player. He was also the assistant manager of the Barcelona team under Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola between 2003 – 2008, winning the Champions League in 2006.
The 56 years old Spanish moved on from Barcelona assistant role to take over as the manager of La Liga side Real Sociedad in 2015. He took them to a 6th place finish in the La Liga and Copa Del Rey quarter-finals in 2016. He also was awarded the La Liga Manager of the Month twice during his stay with Real Sociedad. He left the charge in 2018 and joined another La Liga side Girona FC however, his stint with the Catalonian side ended in disaster as they suffered relegation and Eusebio left the role of the manager after one season.
If being a manager with La Liga sides and winning the UCL as the assistant manager with FC Barcelona be one of the top highlights of Eusebio Sacristan’s CV then surely his lack of experience of working outside of Spain be one of the key aspects that would be highlighted as East Bengal FC look to hire their new head coach for the Indian Super League campaign.
There is also the name of Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler being floated around in the market but not as strongly linked as Eusebio Sacristan or Risto Vidakovic, who are rumoured to be the prime contenders to take over the hot seat as the head coach of East Bengal FC.
