East Bengal’s title hopes have taken a tumble after a 2-1 loss away to league leaders Chennai City FC on Monday.
It was East Bengal who took the lead early in the 9th minute when Laldanmawia Ralte headed home from a Lalrindika Ralte corner which was headed onto him by Borja Gomez from the far post. East Bengal looked to be in control and could have increased the lead had Joby Justin finished a one to one chance around the 20th minute.
Chennai City FC slowly grew into the game and equalised just after the break when their marksman Pedro Manzi flicked home a lowly hit ball past Rakshit Dagar who had a decent game until then. The home side scored the winner in the 70th minute when the East Bengal youngster Manoj Mohammed committed a mistake and let Chennai City FC counter from the right which eventually led Alexander Romario to slot in the ball in the far corner from the top of the box.
This was the fourth defeat for East Bengal and are now 19 points from 11 matches played, 5 points behind the league leaders Chennai City FC on paper who are at 27 from 12 matches. East Bengal will face Indian Arrows next on 18th January at the Salt Lake Stadium.
