East Bengal FC are back in contention for the coveted I-League title after a hard fought 1-2 victory against their nemesis Churchill Brothers at Goa on thursday evening.
It was none other than Willis Plaza who came to haunt East Bengal as he scored as early as in the 3rd minute to give the home side a lead. East Bengal seemed uncomfortable with the playing surface but steadily grew into the game. Dika and Kassim took control of the midfield as they both tried their lucks from long rangers but failed to hit the target. It was their new Spanish import Jaime Santos Colado who equalised for the Red and Gold brigade from a sublime volley from the top of the box from a Lalrindika Ralte corner in the 35th minute.
After the break, both sides looked to counter to break the deadlock and it was again Lalrindika Ralte whose free-kick went directly into the Churchill Brothers net in the 79th minute to give East Bengal the lead.
Coach Alejandro introduced Chullova and Bali to restructure the midfield which resulted in the winning goal. Bali Gagandeep had his first appearance in the I-League this season which was eventually disastrous as he received marching orders in the 89th minute after he was booked for the second time in 4 minutes.
East Bengal held the lead fair and square and finally broke the jinx of not winning the next game after winning the Kolkata Derby. East Bengal also broke the jinx of not winning at Goa against Churchill Brothers, where they last won in 2009.
With this win, East Bengal moves to the second position in the league table with 15 points from 8 matches, just 3 behind league leaders Chennai City FC.
