We at caught up with East Bengal FC’s latest recruit for the upcoming season – 20 year old Novin Gurung in a friendly conversation about his journey into Indian football so far and his upcoming goals with East Bengal FC. correspondent Chayan Mondal conducted the friendly chat with the young full-back from Sikkim and this was what followed:

Q. Tell us about your journey, from Sikkim to Shillong to Kashmir to Kolkata…

I went for a trial (at Shillong) back in 2015 and then I got selected. I played U18 I-League and Shillong League and all… and then next year I got promoted to senior team. I had played 38 matches for Shillong Lajong in Hero I-League… and then I got a job in Indian Navy. I played for them in the Durand cup and I got an offer from Real Kashmir Football Club. I made 11 appearances and then I got called up from East Bengal.

Q. You debuted at a young age for Lajong, we have seen many youngsters coming up the ranks at Lajong, tell us more about the youth development structure there and how you have developed…?

Shillong Lajong Football Club is the first and the best club from NORTH-EAST to play in the I-League . They give first priorities to North-East players. It was a great experienced for me to play for Shillong Lajong. They have provided us a good platform to showcase our talent at higher levels. I am very much grateful to them..

Let me tell you something about Shillong Lajong Football Club, they scout young and best players from North-East sides and they give them good facilities and train them so hard… and those who have a good potential to play in I – league for senior team they will get selected. Most important thing is they gave more chances to young players.

Q. How was it to be at Kashmir as a 20 year old, under David Robertson? Tell us your experience of playing in Srinagar

I think I was the youngest player in our team. It was my pleasure to represent Real Kashmir football club. I had an amazing time. Fans were outstanding #unrealfans. They are really good. All the staff, boss, owner family, CH2 hotel staff – They all gave us good hospitality. They treated us like thier own family.

I am so happy that I met them. Our coach David – he is outstanding, very friendly I have never met a person like him.. Very humble.

Q. When you received an offer from East Bengal FC, how did you react?

I was so happy. When I was a kid, you know I used to think that one day I will play for this club… and the day has come now. I am super excited to wear “lal-halud” jersey.

Q. Even senior players say playing in Kolkata is tough as fans put on huge pressure, are you ready for the challenge?

yeah!! Even I have heard that, but I am ready to face this challenge and I will try to make all the fans happy and proud.. Joy East Bengal!

Q. What is your personal goal at East Bengal FC?

My goal is to make East Bengal fans proud. I will give everything for this club in the upcoming season.
