“Abysmal” would be an apt one-word description for the performance by the Red and Gold brigade as they lost courtesy of a solitary goal to a young spirited Indian Arrows team, who embarrassed them at the Kalyani Stadium today.
Mario Rivera landed in Kolkata in the morning and took charge of the team in the dugout in the evening, as he fielded a team without Ansumana Kromah and Kassim Aidara. He brought back an out-of-form Marti Crespí in the backline replacing Mehtab Singh who had a very good game against Chennai City FC!
The game started with the Red and Gold brigade in full throttle trying to get an early lead but the Arrows boys were composed and thwarted all the attacks from a misfiring attacking trio of the Quess East Bengal FC!
As they game progressed, the Indian Arrows team, who are comprised of mostly U19 boys took control of the game and in moments shook the slow Red and Gold defensive line with their speed and quick passes! The crowd became uneasy and started shouting to introduce Ansumana Kromah but the teams went into halftime at a goalless scoreline.
After the break, there was still no sign of Ansumana Kromah, as Colado and Marcos missed sitters; the Arrows keeper making some good saves to keep the scoreline to 0-0. The Red and Gold brigade moved players upfront in search of the goal and in a swift counter attacking move, against the flow of the game, the young Indian Arrows team took a lead in the 58th minute from a powerful right footed effort from 18 year old “sensation” Vikram Pratap Singh.
The new Spanish coach Mario Rivera quickly introduced Samad Ali Mallick and Ansumana Kromah to get the equaliser but the Red and Gold brigade looked too slow in the buildup and with more men deployed in the Arrows defence after they had taken the lead, Quess East Bengal FC could not grab an equaliser with more than 30 minutes chasing the game!
Ansumana Kromah got the easiest opportunity late in the game to equalise as he just had to tap in from a rebound but he put the ball over the crossbar as the fate seemed not to be in favour of the Red and Gold brigade. Marcos de la Espada was given marching orders in the injury time after getting a second yellow of the game for elbowing an Indian Arrows midfielder, which summed up the day for Quess East Bengal FC, who now have suffered their fourth defeat of the I-League campaign, meaning the hunt for the title is all but over for the season!
