Quess East Bengal FC suffered back to back defeats in the Hero I-League campaign as they were outperformed by Gokulam Kerala FC as the visitors won 1-3.

There were many questions raised throughout the game and we will talk about the 5 main talking points from the match:

1. Disarrayed Defence

5 different defensive line up in 6 matches so far shows clear indication that something is not right at the back and rightly so.

Coach Alejandro Menendez’s boys have conceded in each of the 6 matches so far, with individual errors and poor organisation costing goals in every match.

Against Gokulam Kerala, Marti Crespí and Asheer Akhtar looked all over the place, the backline organisation in tatters as almost every attacking move from the visitors felt like they are going to score.

The least the said is better for the backline, with the Derby upcoming next, the East Bengal fans would get nightmares ahead of the big match.

2. Toothless attack

The attacking quadruple Marcos de la Espada, Jaime Santos, Pintu Mahata and Juan Mera have failed heavily so far in the I-League campaign.

Juan Mera still would get passing marks being the sole creative force in the team, trying to conjure up something for the attack but the striking force failed to cause any harm to opposition defence.

Just 2 goals from open play in last four matches shows the inability of the attacking lineup to make an impact in the opponent box.

3. Where is Bidyashagar Singh?

With 8 goals in the Calcutta Football League and Durand Cup, Bidyashagar Singh broke into the team, providing hope to the Red and Gold faithful.

However, Bidyashagar Singh has not made a single appearance in the starting lineup and just 2 apps from the bench in the I-League campaign so far.

What is more astounding is the fact that Bidyashagar hardly even featured in the 18 man squads for most of the matches!

With a scarcity of goals from the forward line, East Bengal fans can ask to the coach, “Where is Bidyashagar Singh?”

4. No replacement for Borja yet!

It has been more than 10 days since Borja Gomez left for Spain due to personal reasons, yet the team management has failed to recruit a replacement for the Spanish defender.

The January transfer window is in full flow with most teams signing in reinforcements but the Quess East Bengal FC management has failed to find a replacement for Borja Gomez yet and it is highly likely the replacement won’t arrive before the Derby on Sunday.

5. Lacking a leader?

The Red and Gold brigade certainly feels is in lack of a leader who can organise and uplift the performance on field.

The team looked demoralised after conceding the second goal and never looked to bounce back in the second half. The absence of Borja Gomez is surely a hit to the team with no one able to lead the team like he did last season.

With consecutive defeats on the cards, the team needs to sort things quick as the big Derby is just 3 days away. The East Bengal fans would not like to see the team fail in the Derby as they did against Gokulam Kerala FC.
