Hat-trick of Humiliation for East Bengal

Quess East Bengal FC suffered a third consecutive defeat at the hands of Minerva Punjab FC on Tuesday, 4th Dec courtesy of a lone strike from William Opoku.

The Red and Gold brigade had lost the previous two matches against Chennai City FC and Aizawl FC. This was a must-win game for the Kolkata Giants, however, they never really looked to cause danger near the Minerva Punjab FC box, with their first real attempt coming at the 92nd minute from a Jobby Justin header which was saved by the Minerva custodian.

The lacklustre midfield was evident from the opening minutes of the game for East Bengal FC, with players failing to keep possession of the ball. The defending champions Minerva Punjab FC took the opportunity to grow into the game and threaten the defence of the home side..

The dead-lock was finally broken in the 72nd minute, when East Bengal FC goalkeeper Ubaid failed to reach a cross from the left and William Opoku was just at the right place to push the ball into an open net to score the only goal of the game.

This was East Bengal’s third defeat in succession and has caused a huge setback in their title aspirations. The Kolkata Giants now sits with just 6 points from 5 matches.
